You gave me all the flowers

But I barely bloomed

Flowers so beautiful + vibrant

I could never feel as pretty

You made me a bed of a hundred thousand petals

But I still couldn’t rest

Some days I felt I didn’t deserve them

And some days I felt I deserved more

You brought me more flowers than I could hold

I was too weary

Bouquet after bouquet, bright, fragrant + fresh

Would wither and die

I preserved every petal

Each sweet memory now wrinkled + dry

Alone, I arrange dried blooms of the love that was + the love that could have been

If only I had felt as alive as the flowers

Thank you for giving me every flower you had

And promising me all the flowers in the world

The thing about cut flowers, like me,

They are fragrant + lively + gorgeous for a few days, maybe a week

Then the life slowly drains out

They shrink + lose color + can no longer stand

I had no soil of my own

I wasn’t rooted, didn’t  bloom, couldn’t thrive

I need to be planted

With nourishing soil, sunshine, and fresh air

To be tended to, watered consistently

So that I can root strongly and bloom over time

I need patience and care to know I will bloom in my own season

To trust that you’ll stay until I do
